Werry Workforce Whāraurau provides national coordination of the training and support of primary and community organisations delivering Primary Care Triple P and Triple P Discussion Groups in four North Island DHB regions and during the COVID-19 pandemic is coordinating the workforce access to Triple P Online Positive Parenting Programme TPOL.
The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent measures may have been very difficult for some whānau. The Ministry of Health (MOH), as part of their psycho-social response to the pandemic is making Triple P Online, with strategies for parenting during the COVID-19 pandemic, available to the workforce. This will help services supporting families/whānau at this challenging time.
- Access codes for the Triple P Online programmes for the workforce to distribute to families/whānau with children aged 0-12 as well as teenagers, free of charge, which will support parenting throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
- A pathway to additional Triple P telephone support for some parents requesting such assistance.
How can your organisation/service be a part of this initiative?
We had many requests from services to learn more about the content of the TPOL programme. Triple P NZ ran a free webinar where they aimed to give practitioners a closer look at the programme content, as well as the exercises parents experience. This gave practitioners the opportunity to gain some background knowledge so that they could confidently provide informed advice to families/whānau.

When will the access codes be made available?

For how long will these free codes be available?
We have a limited number of codes allocated to us and when these codes are used up, we can no longer provide codes to organisations or families.
Will my organisation account expire?
The organisation code will not expire, however, once our allocation of codes is used up, we will no longer be able to issue free codes.
How long do parents have to complete the programme?
After registering, parents have one year to complete the programme.
Does the code expire?
Yes, after one year.
What happens if the code isn't activated?
If an access code sent to a family is not activated after one month, it ceases to be activatable by the family. After this time, it is available to be issued to another family.
What device will my families need?
Desktops, laptops, or mobile devices can be used to do the programme.
Does it use an internet connection?
The interactive aspect of the programme requires a connection to the internet. There are also downloadable worksheets that parents can use off-line.
Does the parent get a certificate at the end?
Does the parent get a progress report?
The parent will be able to see their progress in the programme, as well as the organisation that issued a code to the parent. The organisation can then follow-up with the parent to encourage, or follow-up as necessary.
What does having a TPOL account mean?
For some organisations it will make sense to have an account with a predetermined number of access codes loaded on to it. They will have a log-in and password which enables them to enter a parent name and email and have an access code issued directly to the parent from this system.
My organisation does not have an account enabling us to issue codes directly to families, how can I support the parents I work with to get codes?
Gain consent from the parents wanting to do the programme to share their name and email with Werry Workforce Whāraurau who will then ensure an access code is issued to them. Your organisation may choose to contact the parent via email or phone to provide encouragement to progress through the programme.
Our organisation has an account in the management system, what if our organisation runs out of codes?
Please inform Werry Workforce Whāraurau and we will add more codes to your account. We can do this until all the codes purchased for the COVID-19 response have been used.
What extra support will I need to give the parent?
If you have an account in the management system, you will see which parents you have issued a code to have started the programme and how they are progressing. Your organisation may want to provide phone calls or emails to motivate parents to continue if they haven’t activated their account within 30 days or have not logged into the programme in 30 days. Provide your usual support to parents as and when requested
A follow up phone call or email to parents who you have requested Werry to issue an access code to can be engaging and motivating for some parents. Your organisation may wish to make such an email or phone call to parents.
What if parents who our organisation issues a code to have specific Triple P content questions?
After activating their access code, a parent will be given an email address to contact if they need support from a trained Triple P provider for help implementing the strategies with their family. This request for support will come to Werry Workforce Whāraurau who will coordinate a provider to contact the parent.
Based on clinical judgment and in consultation with parents, the Triple P provider may link the family with further support.
Who will be trained to provide the Telephone Triple P consultation support?
This is under development. Those eligible for the one-day training need to already be trained to provide a Triple P programme. There are eligible candidates across New Zealand. The interest from organisations in this initiative will help determine this panel of providers.
What information will my organisation know about the progress of parents issued an access code by our organisation?
Those organisations with accounts will be able to see the individual and aggregate programme progress, completion rates, and before and after measures of parents they have issued a code to
Parents who our organisation issued a code to did not complete the programme!
Triple P is a multi-level family support system, there are different programmes of varying intensity. This is because families have different needs, and to support an entire population of parents raising children there needs to be different support available.
Completing one module is sufficient for some families. It may be all the information they need at this time.
Randomised controlled research on the regular Triple P Online Programme (without COVID-19 material added) found that completion of up to three modules was sufficient content to be covered by a parent to achieve significant improvements in disruptive child behaviour (Sanders, Baker, Turner 2012).
The MOH and Werry Workforce Whāraurau are committed to understanding how this programme supports the needs of Māori. We are collecting this information in the most supportive way possible.
- Parents are asked to select their ethnicity at the same time as activating the access code they are sent. Ethnicity data, with no other identifying information, is sent to Werry Workforce Whāraurau.
- Organisations referring parents to Werry Workforce Whāraurau to issue an access code are asked to provide ethnicity data when completing the code issuing form.
- Those organisations that have an account to issue codes directly to parents will be asked to provide Werry Workforce Whāraurau with aggregate ethnicity data for those issued codes.
What happens to parents’ information?
For referred parents. A referred parent's name, email, and ethnicity data comes to Werry Workforce Whāraurau via an automated form. Werry Workforce Whāraurau enters the name and email information into the CMS for an access code to be issued to the parent by the system. Werry Workforce Wharaurau will retain the name, email address, and referring organising in a password-protected cloud-based file in case the parent requests support from a trained Triple P provider. This will help Werry link that parent with a Trained provider at the referring organisation if this is possible and the preferred option of the parent.
For account holders. The manager of an account can see records of those issued an access code and those activating the account issued by the organisation, whereas a practitioner can see records of those issued access codes by themselves. Parent records include, first and last name; email address; date of registration, last log in; module and topic number, and access expiry date. These records are accessible to the primary account manager & the Werry Parenting Team. Note, only overview reports available on the dashboard, summarising number or registrations and module completion are of interest to Werry for monitoring and reporting.
How is parents' privacy protected in the CMS?
When a parent is registered to use TPOL, the following personal data is captured by Triple P Group:
- Parent's first and last name;
- Parent's registration code;
- Parent's email address; and
- The parent is asked to create a password.

Do caregivers of the same children need a code each?
Parents/caregivers can share an access code and work together OR they can each have their own access code.
Do I have to send out resources to families?
For what families is Triple P Online best for?
TPOL is for any parent wanting to improve aspects of family life and who is interested in setting aside the time to do the programme.
If a parent has children both in the 0-10 age range and the 10-16 age range what programme is advised?
Explore with the parent which concerns are leading to the most parent concern or stress and offer the corresponding programme.
Is TPOL suitable for our New Zealand context?
What we know:
- The Triple P programmes that have been used in NZ for years have been well received and have proven to be very helpful to New Zealand families from diverse backgrounds and family situations
- Some of the TPOL trials forming the evidence base of this programme were conducted in NZ by The University of Auckland.
- Acceptability of the strategies has been demonstrated within the context of Te Whanau Pou Toru
- The self-regulatory model underpinning the programme has parents choose their own goals, the strategies they wish to implement, and self-evaluate their progress. This enables the programme to be acceptable and effective across linguistically, ethnically, religious, and culturally diverse families across 35 different countries.
- The families shown in the interactive online programme are not from New Zealand. Users will see diverse world-wide cultural representation.
